By Craig Olson 05/10/2024, 6:45am CDT

Estee Versteeg won the 800 (2:28.87) and Violet McConn was first in the 400 (1:00.89) to lead the Otter Girls Track and Field team to a 3rd place finish at the Section 8AA True Team meet on Thursday.  Pequot Lakes finished first, Detroit Lakes was second, the Otters third, Perham fourth and Park Rapids Area fifth in the nine-team field.  Versteeg also had a runner-up finish in the 1600 (5:16.80), and Cassie Wellman was second in the 3200 (11:44.23) and third in the 1600 (5:21.12).  The Otters also had second place finishes in the 4x100 relay and the 4x800 relay.

“The idea of the true team meet means bringing together every part of the team,” stated Fergus Falls Head Coach Niki Welde.  “There is a higher point score put towards the relays.  We went into this knowing we could challenge for the top 3 teams.  We battled in team points all day.  As coaches we could not have asked more from our girls than they gave today.  We had a few hiccups but matched those with standout moments.  Every one of our relays performed at their best.”

Otter Boys Compete at Section True Team Track and Field Meet

By Derek Meyer 05/10/2024, 12:45am CDT

The Fergus Falls Boys Track and Field team traveled to Detroit Lakes to compete at the Section 8AA True Team meet on Thursday. Unlike traditional meets where a team could dominate with a few elite performers, the True Team Series leveled the playing field by limiting entries per event. Each team was permitted only two entries for individual events, and one entry for each relay event. This format ensured that every athlete's performance contributed to the team's success, as every entry was scored based on their finishing position. This approach highlighted the importance of every team member, from the top performers to those contributing crucial points with second entries. The True Team Series thus became a celebration of true team effort and performance, where every athlete's contribution was vital to their team's success.

On the Boys side Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton won the meet with 414.5 points and will qualify for the True Team state meet held in Stillwater next week. Detroit Lakes placed 2nd with 406 and Fergus Falls placed 3rd with 353 points.
