Yellowjackets End Season with Loss to New London-Spicer

By Craig Olson 03/14/2024, 9:30pm CDT

Perham struggled offensively, shooting just 29% (14-48) from the field, making only 2-of-17 (12%) from 3-point range, and turning the ball over 21 times in their 54-41 loss to New London-Spicer in the Class AA Consolation semifinals at Concordia University in St. Paul on Thursday.  Willow Thiel ended her Perham career with a double-double (25 points, 12 rebounds).  Kennedy Pilgrim pulled down 9 rebounds and Ryleigh Mickelson (5 points, 3 assists, 4 steals, 8 rebounds, 2 blocked shots) turned in a solid all-around floor game.

The Perham girls’ basketball team opened play at the Class AA State Tournament with a 94-84 loss to Providence Academy.  “It was a 3 point game multiple times, including with less than 3 minutes to go,” reported Head Coach TJ Super of the Yellowjackets. “We just couldn't get over the hump. Every time we had it to one possession, they would hit a big shot. I felt like our defense against Maddyn Greenway was really good, we turned her into a jump shooter, she only took 3 shots at the rim in half-court offense and took 20 shots from over 10 feet away. The problem is she made a bunch of those shots and she made great passes, she was really good that night. We limited Providence to 13 transition points, including only 4 points off of our missed shots (9 off of steals).”

Convincingly, the Perham Yellowjackets took care of business in wrapping up their back-to-back Section Championship with a 75-57 over the #7 State-ranked Pelican Rapids Vikings.

Willow Thiel led the Jackets with 35 points and 16 rebounds. She was 3-4 from deep, including 2 big ones that stopped Pelican mini-runs. In our 3 playoff games (first round bye) she has 109 points (on 42-62 shooting) and 47 rebounds, absolutely unbelievable!
