The Hillcrest boys’ basketball team turned up the defensive intensity in their 68-37 Little Eight Conference win at Rothsay on Tuesday night, holding the Tigers scoreless for the first seven minutes of the second half as they were able to extend their halftime lead and establish control of the game.

“Overall, I liked our defensive execution,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Ryan Garvin.  “Sean Berge had 6 deflections and 8 steals to lead us, adding to his 9 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assists.  He continues to add value in many significant ways.”

The Comets were led by Noah Brumfield (20 points, 9 rebounds, 7 deflections, 3 steals), Justin Petersen (14 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists), Luke Christensen (13 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks) and Preston Berge (4 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals).

“We knew that Coach (Taylor) Fuhs would have something cooked up for us to try to take away Noah and they were able to do that for the first 9 minutes of the game,” noted Garvin.  “Our coaching staff collectively made some nice adjustments to our offensive scheme and we were able to finish the half on a 28-5 run.  I thought Justin Petersen did a great job for us handling and distributing the ball from many places on the court and Luke Christensen protected the paint for us, defensively.”

Hillcrest (17-4, 11-2 LEC) will play a conference game in Underwood on Friday.

Rothsay is at Battle Lake Thursday and will host Parkers Prairie on Friday.
