It was senior night at the Hillcrest Student Activities Center where the Comet boys’ basketball team defeated the Ashby Arrows, 79-57 in a Little Eight Conference matchup.  “It was a great night for our senior boys, Nathan Aanes, Erik Bjorndahl and JustinPetersen,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Ryan Garvin.  “We got to run them extended minutes together.  They competed well and played within the offense.”

Noah Brumfield led all scorers with 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting.  He added 8 assists and 5 rebounds.  Luke Christensen had 16 points and 4 rebounds.  Seniors Justin Petersen, Erik Bjorndahl and Nathan Aanes dropped in 11, 9 and 3, respectively.  Aanes also contributed 3 assists.

“Overall, our patience on offense looked good for most of the game,” noted Garvin.  “In the first half we still settled for some outside shots that we know we can get later on in a possession, but the boys were shooting the ball pretty well and sometimes those are hard reads to make in the moment.  Ashby did a great job of attacking the rim and gave themselves some great opportunities to score, especially down the stretch in the first half when they went on a 16-5 run.  That cut the halftime lead to 45-32.  In the second half we were able to go deep into our bench, which was a great way to end Senior Night.”

The Arrows landed three in double figures.  Brodie Ecker went 6/6 at the free throw line and ended the night with 14 points.  Jake Norby and Richie Johnson contributed 10 points apiece.  Easton Nelson and Levi Bogenrief added 9 points each.  The Arrows shot 39% (21/56) overall from the field including 25% (3/12) from three-point range.  They converted 63% (12/19) of their free throw attempts.

“The Comets are a talented, hard-working team,” said Ashby Head Coach John Holsten.  “They turn your mistakes into transition baskets.  Our three-point defense had to be better tonight.  We needed to coach better too.”

The Arrows overall record drops to 5-9 and 4-7 in the Little Eight Conference.  They travel to Hancock Friday night to take on the Owls.

Hillcrest (13-2, 9-1 LEC) has won four straight games.  They will host Border West on Friday night.

Coach Garvin concluded with these comments, “After the game, our junior boys served ice cream sundaes to our basketball varsity families and we got to hear from the fathers of our seniors speak a blessing over their sons. It was a beautiful time of reflection on their raising of their sons, how they've seen their boys mature in stature and in their walk with the Lord. We also got to hear from Nathan, Erik and Justin articulate to their parents their gratefulness for how they have been raised and how each of them have been pointed by their parents to Christ.”
