Junior Noah Brumfield set a single game scoring record for the Hillcrest boys’ basketball team on Tuesday night when he scored 46 points in a 92-60 win over Underwood.  Brumfield had 29 halftime points on 11-of-15 shooting.  He also had 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals.  The previous record of 45 was set by his brother, Sam Brumfield, in a game against Battle Lake last season.

“I was interested to see how we would come out tonight, what kind of energy and intensity we would have and these boys answered the bell,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Ryan Garvin.  “Right away it seemed that the boys had their offensive game rolling a bit and that was refreshing to see.”

Luke Christensen also had a nice game on the offensive end, finishing with 20 points and 8 rebounds.  Gabe Swedenburg played great defense for the Comets and also finished with 5 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

“Unfortunately, we had some early miscues largely due to a poor coaching decision that took our boys out of good positioning and caused some fouls at the rim,” said Coach Garvin.  “Although we were up 30-11 at one point, those fouls became free throws and Underwood capitalized (10-of-11).  The boys made a change and although we didn’t make as many stops as we really should have, we looked a lot more comfortable on the defensive end together.”

Underwood shot the ball well behind Hudson Risbrudt’s 17 in the first half.  Noah Link scored 11, Drew Evavold 10 and Cole Peterson 9 for the Rockets.  Evavold had a team high 6 rebounds and Evan Lundgren led the team with 2 steals.

“We simply didn’t match their intensity tonight,” said Underwood Head Coach Kellen Shebeck.  “Hillcrest came out firing, and we didn’t adjust quick enough to it on our defensive end.  Jayden Harig came off the bench for us and gave some valuable minutes tonight, especially defensively and rebounding. I’m very proud of his effort tonight!”

Underwood shot 39.5% (17-43) from the field and made 39% (7-18) of their 3-point shots.  Hillcrest scored 33 points off 22 Rocket turnovers and made 57% (38-67) of their field goal attempts.  Hillcrest had 26 assists on their 38 made baskets and came up with 16 steals.

Garvin concluded by saying, “Even though Noah had a big scoring game, tonight was a night we shared the ball really well as evidenced by a season high 23 assists.  Ethan Swedberg had 5 to go along with 5 rebounds, Sean Berge had 4 and Matthew Knutson had 4.  “Compound that with only turnovers and we are hoping that this is the direction we’re trending as a basketball team.”

Hillcrest (9-1, 5-0 LEC) will host Battle Lake on Thursday night.

Underwood (6-6) will host Norman County East/Ulen Hitterdal on Thursday.
