Hillcrest Lutheran Academy hosted Hancock in a boys’ basketball game on Thursday night with the Owls picking up an 81-71 victory over the Comets. Matt Thompson hit 14-of-19 free throws and scored a game high 37 points to lead the Owls. Hudson VerSteeg was also in double figures with 15 and Jackson Koehl added a dozen.
Jackson Koehl added 9 rebounds and 8 assists, while Luke Joos contributed 7 assists and 3 steals, and Zachary Koehl had 5 assists and 3 steals.
“I'm proud of how our boys battled tonight,” commented Hillcrest Head Coach Ryan Garvin. “In general, I love their fight, their determination. Unfortunately, we got beat back door on too many occasions and turned the ball over too many times, especially in the second half, to beat a good team like Hancock. Coach Cory does a great job with that Hancock squad. They pass and cut really well. Their squad seems to be finding and filling their roles well around Matt Thompson.”
Sam Brumfield (25 points, 7 rebounds) and Justin Peterson (24 points, 6 rebounds) led the Comets.
Hancock (18-4) extended their winning streak to ten games. They will host Wheaton/Herman-Norcross on Friday night.
Hillcrest (16-6) had a four game winning streak snapped with the loss. They will entertain Battle Lake on Friday night.
