Grace VanErp scored 18 of her game high 30 points in the second half as the Battle Lake girls’ basketball team overcame a sixteen point first half deficit to defeat the Hillcrest lady Comets by the score of 64-60 on Thursday night in Fergus Falls.  The Comets led 34-24 at the half, but Battle Lake came back to tie the game at 46-46.  The lead changed hands multiple times down the stretch.

Battle Lake also received 14 points apiece from Ady Tysdal and Morgan Malone.

“We had a battle tonight at Hillcrest,” commented Battle Lake Head Coach David Marso.  “The Comets came out hot shooting the three and jumped out to an early lead.  They hit 7 threes in the first half to build a ten point halftime lead.  In the second half, they continued to shoot well, but we were able to get our offense going, scoring 40 points in the final 18 minutes of play.”

Hillcrest was led by 21 from Madi Ballweg, 18 from Ruby Peterson (6 3’s) and 14 from Madi Foss.  Foss completed a double-double with 10 rebounds and also added 5 assists.  The Comets made 13 three-pointers in the contest.

We played a strong first half and we shot the ball well to start the game. Battle Lake out-rebounded us by 16 and that really seemed to be the difference maker in the second half.

"Madi Ballweg and Madi Foss played really nice games for us tonight," acknowledged Coach Hannah Clark of the lady Comets. "Madi Ballweg led us in scoring and Madi Foss finished with a double-double. Ruby Peterson hit some really big 3’s throughout the game and gave us a big burst of energy. I thought Ella Knutson played great defense tonight on Grace Van Erp. Van Erp is a great player. She ended up with 30 points, but I thought Ella really made her work for every shot."

Hillcrest (9-12) entertains Breckenridge at 3:15pm Saturday.

Battle Lake (15-6) will travel to Barrett to face West Central Area on Friday night.
