Hillcrest traveled to Parkers Prairie for a Little Eight Conference boys’ basketball game on Saturday and the Comets jumped out to a 34-23 lead on the way to a 67-50 victory over the Panthers.

“I thought we played a fairly solid game from start to finish tonight,” commented Hillcrest Head Coach Ryan Garvin. “We came out and shot the ball well and played fairly solid defense throughout.  Our on-the-ball defense was key for us.  We knew that we needed to make them work early in their possessions, make entry passes difficult and make sure every 3-point attempt was contested.  We did that well throughout the night.”

Sam Brumfield paced the Comets with 29 points, scoring 19 in the second half. He also finished with 5 rebounds and 3 assists.  Justin Petersen had a great night offensively, scoring 15 and grabbing 5 rebounds.  Noah Brumfield had another solid evening with 11 points and 5 rebounds.  Rounding out the scoring, Zayne Weinrich finished with 6, Luke Christensen 4 and Matthew Knutson 2.

“Overall, I was pleased with our offensive decision making tonight,” added Coach Garvin.   “This may be our first game with single digit turnovers.  Our player are going to make wrong decisions, they are high schoolers, our opponent is a formidable foe, and turnovers are a part of the game.  Out issue is when we compound them.  I though our young men self-corrected really well in this game.”

Jacob Wagner led the Panthers with 13 and Mason Ahrens finished with 11.

Hillcrest (14-5, 9-1 LEC) is at Ortonville on Monday, at St. John’s Prep on Tuesday and at Underwood on Friday.

Parkers Prairie (10-9, 5-4 LEC) travel to Ashby on Tuesday and hosts Brandon-Evansville on Friday.
