The Hillcrest boys’ basketball team handed Rothsay a 70-61 loss on Friday at the Bill Rose Gymnasium in Rothsay.

“We had a great first half tonight,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Ryan Garvin. “I thought we came out with great energy and posture. We got stops in 16 of the first 19 possessions. That's what we're capable of. In the second half, we only had a couple of good stretches on the defensive end. We have to continue to improve on that end of the floor, but it was nice to see what we're able to do together.”

Sam Brumfield paced the Comets with 32 points, 3 rebounds and 5 steals.  Noah Brumfield contributed a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.  Justin Peterson added 11 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists, and Caden Fischer had 5 points and 3 assists.

“We did a great job taking care of the ball in the first half; we only had a couple of turnovers early on,” noted Coach Garvin. “I still think we press and force the issue to our detriment. In the second half, we easily compiled double-digit turnovers. We need to continue to cultivate a deeper understanding of what it means to be patient on the offensive side of the ball.”

Tanner Heier led the Tigers with 29 points, 19 of them coming in the second half.

Hillcrest (12-4, 7-1 LEC) will play in Wheaton on Monday night.

Rothsay (5-12) will host New York Mills on Saturday.
