The Ashby boys’ basketball team improved their season record to 3-0 as they beat Hillcrest Lutheran Academy 74-53 in their Little Eight Conference opener on Saturday night in Ashby.  The Arrows led 38-27 at the half.

“Our activity on the offensive glass extended possessions and led to several three-point baskets,” reported Ashby Head Coach John Holsten.  “We made 8 of our 10 three’s for the game in the first half and decent free throw shooting in the second half enabled us to keep a good working margin.  We received key minutes off the bench from Matson Hoff, Brodie Ecker and Carter SpanglerCarson Spangler played great defense on Comet point guard Sam Brumfield and Sam Sorenson was a solid presence in the post.”

Jacob Cook scored 33 points to lead three Arrows in double figures.  Torin Olson netted 19 and Hunter Norby added 13.  Cook had his second double-double of the week, grabbing 14 rebounds.  Norby snared 9 boards.  As a team the Arrows shot 54% (28-52) from the field.

“We got beat pretty handily by an aggressive, well coached Ashby team,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Ryan Garvin.  “After starting the night pretty well offensively and defensively, we gave up a couple of offensive rebounds and second chance points that we allowed to be demoralizing and it impacted the way we played through much of the rest of the first half.”

Sam Brumfield led the Comets with 22 points.  Noah Brumfield added 13, Yuchan Ha at 10 and Caden Fischer finished with 8.

“Sam and Yuchan’s defensive energy and pressure was really pretty good tonight and, in many ways, kept us somewhat in this game.  Jacob Cook shot the ball really well for Ashby tonight and we let him get too comfortable,” reported Coach Garvin.  “I did a really poor job of helping our boys respond to that momentum swing.”

Ashby (3-0) will play at Ortonville Tuesday night.

Hillcrest (2-1) will host West Central Area on Tuesday.
