The Hillcrest baseball team picked up its first win of the season Monday as the Comets topped the Browerville-Eagle Valley Tigers 8-4.  The story of the game was the stellar pitching of Hillcrest junior Will Heggland and a stingy Comet defense.

The Comets struck first with a run in the opening frame on a Nate Bermel single. Hillcrest added five more runs in the second inning on selective hitting and an RBI sacrifice from Bermel.

The Tigers responded in the third with four consecutive singles for two runs. Browerville inched closer with another run in the fifth inning to cut the lead to three.

The two teams traded runs in the sixth with an Isaac Iverson RBI, while the Tigers added a run on an error. Hillcrest would end all scoring as Joe Torgerson scored on a passed ball in the top of the seventh.

"After Friday's games, I told the boys I can see us turning the corner and they believed in it," Comets head coach Zach Stich. "Will Heggland pitched a heck of a game tonight and the defense was outstanding."

Heggland went all seven innings, fanning four and giving up four runs, two earned, and allowing nine hits.

Bermel led the Comets at the plate going 1-for-4 with two RBIs, while Torgerson scored the runs going 1-for-2 at the plate. Isaac Iverson went 2-for-2 with an RBI, and Logan Kowalski, Griffin Haus and Luke McGuire each had an RBI.

The Comets will return home for a Little Eight Conference doubleheader against Ashby at M State - Fergus Falls Field Friday at 4 p.m.
