West Central Area track and field coach Dave Schleicher shares a number of early season highlights after the first 5 meets of the spring for the Knights.  “We have a long list of positives with this team,” stated Coach Schleicher.  “We’re lucky to have dedicated coaches and kids that work hard and push themselves.  Coach Matt Nemec has turned WCA throws around, and Coach Austin Hanson has our distance program dialed in.  We have a lot of newcomers this season that have a ton of talent and are just learning their events.”

Schleicher’s observations on the girls’ team include:
Terina Blascyk starting off the season by jumping 5’ 1 in the very first meet which would make state standards this year in the high jump.  “She has continued to impress this season as she cleared a personal best of 5’ 2 in her last meet.  We’re just scratching at her potential this year.”

Sydney Ulrich has been a major contributor, scoring in most every event she competes in. “She has really increased her speed this season, and her consistency in the jumps has greatly improved.”

Kiera Gherke has medaled in the 100 meter dash in every meet so far this season.  “She has worked hard on her blocks to improve times and chase down the school record.  Sydney and Kiera push each other in practice and meets and both have a shot ab breaking the school record.”

Maci Robinson is also on that list of chasing school records.  Every meet she either meets or beats her personal best and is inching closer to records and a possible trip to state.  “You will be hard pressed to find anyone that work harder than Maci.  She is a great role model for our younger athletes and a great person to be around.”

The girls’ 4x100 relay team of Ulrich, Whitney Westrom, Kiera Gherke and Keyenna Gherke have had great success this season.  “They continue to improve consistency in handoffs and have been pushing themselves to get better every meet.  Our whole girls’ team has really found some balance and we are scoring points in most every event, which has allowed them to compete for team wins in most meets.  We have a strong girls’ team with a great mindset going 9into the home stretch and hope to contend for a Conference title.”

The boys’ team, according to Schleicher, also has a lot of talent and have been scoring a lot of points.  “We are down a bit on numbers on the boys’ squad, but they continue to compete hard.  They also hope to challenge for a WCC title this season.”

Ben Nyreen is following up his strong junior season with an even better season to start his senior year.  “Coach Nemec and Ben have been fine tuning a few things in hopes of a repeat trip to state.”

Carter Kjesbo is new to Track and Field, but has run cross country, and he has come into the sport as a force to be reckoned with having turned in impressive times in the 800 and 2 mile.  “He’s really just figuring out the races and tempos.  He will be a fun one to watch down the stretch this season and for seasons to come.”

Schleicher concluded with, “Our season seems to have just started and we are four meets away from Conference already and sub-sections to follow.  We have a great, hard-working group and it should be fun to watch these athletes down the stretch.”
