The Hillcrest baseball team opened their season on the road Thursday against Lake Park-Audubon. The Raiders took advantage of a few miscues and the cold Comet bats on the way to a 4-0 victory. The Comets left the bases loaded in the first inning, which was their lone threat to the Raiders. Lake Park would plate a run in the first and a two-run bomb by Tyson Nerdahl in the third gave the Raiders a 3-0 lead. LPA added another run in the fourth to end the scoring.
“I am pleased with our effort in our first game,” Comets head coach Zach Stich said. “We still have a lot of work to do before our double header against Rothsay.”
Nate Bermel had the lone hit for the Comets, while Ethan Swedberg recorded a steal.
Bermel took the loss, pitching 4 innings, allowing 3 earned runs and striking out 4 batters. Luke McGuire pitched 2 innings of relief, picking up 3 strikeouts.
In the JV game, the Comets used crack base running and a selective eye at the plate to get an 11-1 victory. Pete Nordick led the young Comets at the plate going 2-for-2 with 3 RBI, while Aiden Hendricks and Eli Pangman each scored twice. Drake Veldhouse and Jace Bermel each pitched 3 innings, with Veldhouse fanning 8.
The Comets will be in search of their first win as they travel to take on the Tigers in a Little Eight Conference double header starting at 4:00pm Friday, April 19.
