Hillcrest traveled to Kindred, ND for a high school boys’ basketball game on Thursday night.  The Comets came up short with a 49-41 final scoring favoring the home team.  “Super proud of our boys tonight,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Ryan Garvin.  “They went out and played with such aggression tonight.  Our defense wasn’t perfect, but so many guys did so many good things on that end of the floor that kept us in the game and gave us a chance at the end.”

The Comets started the game on a 6-0 run, but finished the first quarter down 11-10.  “We generated some good energy with that 6-0 start,” said Coach Garvin.  “The second quarter we gave the ball away too much and ended with 13 turnovers on the half, something we knew we needed to limit if we were going to have a successful evening.  We went into the locker room down 25-14, but I liked so much of what our defense was doing.”

The Comets came out after halftime and put up 22 in the third quarter with all 7 of Luke Christensen’s points coming in that quarter and 8 from Noah Brumfield, who led all scorers on the night with 15.  “Unfortunately, we really struggled to score in the fourth quarter and couldn’t convert when the opportunities were there,” noted Garvin.

Brumfield (15 points, 5 rebounds), Preston Berge (8 points, 8 rebounds) and Christensen (7 points, 9 rebounds) led the Comets.

Zane Holmquist, Vincent Nash and Leo Nordick all did a great job coming off the bench for the Comets.  Nordick did some nice work against Riley Sunram, Kindred’s 6’7” Gopher football recruit.  Holmquist and Gabe Swedenburg did a nice job making Kindred’s freshman point guard Brooks Bakko work in the full court.  “We’re really proud of those contributions to this team tonight,” added Garvin.  “Again, I’m pleased with so many things tonight.  It was like a playoff atmosphere in the gym and a fantastic test for us.  We’re excited to have Kindred at our place next year.”

Bakko (13 points) and Sunram (11 points) finished in double figures to lead Kindred, while Jake Starcevic and Presley Peraza each had 9 points.

Hillcrest (16-3, 12-0 LEC) will host Parkers Prairie on Friday night in a Little Eight Conference game.
