The Underwood Rockets and Hillcrest Comets had a back-and-forth battle on Friday night in Little Eight Conference girls’ basketball at the Comet gym in Fergus Falls.  Underwood held a slim one point lead at 37-36 at the half.  The Rockets went on a run late in the second half and pulled away for an 81-63 victory.

The Rockets Liz Lukken led all scorers in the game with a career high 35 points on 16-of-24 shooting.  Ezrah Baker added 21 points and 7 rebounds, Trinity Baker contributed 11 points and Kallyn Grove turned in a solid floor game with 6 points, 14 rebounds, 5 blocks and 4 assists.  Underwood shot 59% (35-59) from the field and made 8-of-17 (47%) from 3-point range, including 8-of-12 in the second half.

“Liz and Ezrah had very good games tonight,” stated Underwood Head Coach Brian Hovland.  “I thought we did a much better job defensively in the second half of containing their shooters.  They got hot in the first half and in the second half we went on a run with 6 consecutive trips with made 3-pointers.”

Elsa Retzlaff led the Comets with 24 points and 7 rebounds.  Ella Knutson added 17 points and 6 rebounds, and Ruby Peterson contributed 16 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals.  Kate Olstad ended up with 4 points and 7 boards.

“I was so proud of how tough the girls played tonight,” commented Hillcrest Head Coach Hannah Clark.  “It was back and forth all game, but late in the second half Underwood went on a run where they hit a bunch of 3’s and we just didn’t have enough gas in the tank to come back from that.  We needed to do a better job containing the drive and protecting the paint.  We let Underwood get to the rim with ease and get high percentage shots.”

Underwood (10-2, 7-1 LEC) will play at Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley on Tuesday.  They will host Lake park-Audubon on Thursday and Ashby on Friday.

Hillcrest (8-4, 6-2 LEC) has a non-conference game at Park Christian School in Moorhead on Saturday.
