The Hillcrest boys’ basketball team held the Rothsay Tigers to just 38 points on Thursday night as the Comets posted a 68-38 Little Eight Conference road victory.  Luke Christensen and Noah Brumfield reached double figures for the Comets with 23 and 18 points, respectively.  Seven other players finished in the scoring column, and Gabe Swedenburg and Ethan Swedberg each added 3 assists.

“Rothsay tried to take away Luke and Noah and I think we forced the issue by either trying to get the ball to them or forcing some shots, but even though the offense seemed a bit disjointed at times, our guys really did a great job of taking advantage of opportunities, crashing the glass and giving themselves second chances,” said Head Coach Ryan Garvin of the Comets.  “We just have too many options for a team to focus all of their defensive energy and attention on Luke and Noah.  Too many of our guys can make plays and the shoot the ball.”

Brumfield surpassed Tom Scheid (1186 points) on the all-time scoring list at Hillcrest and sits at 1194 points.  Only Scott Colbeck (1206), Jake Isaac (1413) and Daniel Nersten (1912) have more points all time.  He also added 5 assists in the game.

“I was very pleased with the way his team played on the defensive end,” said Coach Garvin, “There are going to be some nights where things aren’t flowing offensively and you have to get it done on the defensive end.  These Comets have seemed to really own their defensive assignment and persona, holding three teams in a row under 44 points.  We are so very proud of that work.  We’ll have a tough task of defending a versatile Park Christian team on Saturday.”

Garvin also had praise for his JV team, saying, “They really played an inspired game tonight.  It was fun to watch their energy and effort.  So many guys with great minutes, especially on the defensive end.  I’m proud of how they responded to playing rather flat on Tuesday night.  They played up-tempo and aggressive.  They made some mistakes but were able to recognize and self-correct.  Zane Holmquist played great on defense and got his teammates out in transition well.  Kian Stender and Cohen Draxten did a great job defending the rim and coming away with defensive rebounds.  The future is bright, and fun!”
