The Hillcrest boys’ basketball team held Lake Park-Audubon to 26 points on Thursday night as the Comets posted a 65-26 home court victory over the Raiders in a non-conference contest.  “Great night for us tonight on the defensive end,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Ryan Garvin.  “The challenge to ourselves was, can we play with a defense first mentality and then, if we can, can we play with that defensive intensity for 36 minutes?  I think the answer tonight was yes!”

“We learned a good deal of things about ourselves individually and as a team on the defensive side,” continued Coach Garvin.  “Gabe Swedenburg played outstanding on the defense end tonight.  He had his hands in passing lanes and partnered with Sean Berge to make the offensive end difficult for LPA.  Lincoln Nash and Noah Bjorndahl also made great contributions on the defensive end.”

The defensive aggressiveness led to turning over LPA 10 times in the first half and between 8 and 10 transition baskets for the Comets.  “Our perimeter defenders, which was everyone at some point or another, really limited their offensive looks,” added Coach Garvin.  “We continued our defensive pressure through the second half and gave up one three-point basket through the first 14 minutes of the second half.  I was very impressed with our resolve and commitment to each other.  Noah Brumfield, who had his best defensive game of the year, also poured in 31 points and added 5 rebounds.”

Luke Christenson had 10 points, Leo Nordick finished with 4 points and 4 rebounds and Nash had 8 points.

LPA was led by Troy Nerdahl with 10 points.

Hillcrest (6-1) is on a six game winning streak heading into their next game on Tuesday at Parkers Prairie.
