Luke Christensen scored 33 points, 19 of them in the opening half, and Noah Brumfield finished with 21, 14 of them, including four 3’s, coming in the second half, as the Hillcrest boys’ basketball team recorded an impressive 86-62 road win against Mahnomen-Waubun.  Ethan Swedberg scored 12 of his 18 points in the first half, as the Comets took an 11-point halftime lead.

“Great night for us in Waubun,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Ryan Garvin. “Really very proud of how we kept our composure tonight. Before the game we talked briefly about Galatians 5:15-17 and how we all have a tendency to snipe at each other and make things about us individually or point out each other's mistakes, but how we're called to live in unity. To not live for and gratify ourselves, but to, together, live in step with the Spirit of God and, in doing so, at peace with one another knowing we share the same goal: to play this game excellently for each other and for the Lord.”

Garvin continued, “So speaking of that composure, we knew that Coach Clark would have his boys flying around disrupting as many passing lanes as possible, so it came down to our response to that pressure. Mahnomen-Waubun does a great job capitalizing on the havoc they create, so we knew we would have to sustain a few runs from them tonight. The ends of each half were key for us tonight. We got a great string of stops at the end of the first half and were able to establish an 11 point halftime lead. Coming out of halftime we scored 5 quick points before M-W put together their own 17-5 run. This was an important moment for us. No demonstrations of frustration, but a mature composure. We proceeded to finish the game with a 32-14 advantage largely keyed by our defensive discipline.”

The Comets shot 52.9% (36/68) from the field and made 9-of-24 3's for 37.5%.  Hillcrest also held a 38-32 advantage on the boards.  Christensen had 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals, while Brumfield secured 7 rebounds and dished out 8 assists.  Sean Berge had 8 steals, 4 assists and 5 points.

Coach Garvin added, “Lots of possessions in games against Waubun and although I think we ended with 20 turnovers - many of them unforced - we were able to turn them over 25 times. Nice to win that battle again that team. I also appreciated our overall possession efficiency and shot selection.  Looking forward to a little rest before we get a couple home games next week. Looking forward to getting Preston Berge back and worked into our regular line-up.”

Mahnomen-Waubun shot 41.7% (25/60) on the night.  They were led by Carter Clark with 15 and Goodwin Kash with 13.

Hillcrest (3-1) will try to extend their winning streak to four games when they host Ashby on Tuesday night.  The Comets will entertain Border West next Thursday before heading into a two-week break over the Christmas holidays.
