Sophomore Marcel Washington connected on a corner three as time ran out on Tuesday night, lifting the St. Cloud Apollo Eagles boys’ basketball team to a thrilling 59-56 victory over Fergus Falls at the Kennedy Secondary School Gold Gymnasium.  Junior Azayah Washington led all scorers with 35 points in the game, including 6-of-6 from 3-point range and 7-for-7 on the line.

Azayah Washington scored the first 11 points of the game for the Eagles as they had an 11-10 lead when the Otters went on a 6-point run to establish their largest lead of the night at 16-11.  Apollo gained the momentum when they closed out the half on a 15-2 run to go into halftime leading 35-25.  The Eagles increased their lead to 13 points on two different occasions in the second half, however, the Otters had an eight point run that put them within striking distance at 48-45 with under six minutes remaining in the game.  With the game tied at 56 and under a minute to play, each team turned the ball over.  Apollo got a shot off as the clock was ticking down, but it failed to make contact with the rim and bounced out of bounds, leaving just seven-tenths of a second on the clock.  The Otters had to go the length of the floor to try to get off a desperation shot to try and win it in regulation, but the attempted full court pass hit the curtain that hangs from the ceiling over mid-court, resulting in a dead ball and giving the Eagles possession under the basket.  The pass to the Marcel Washington in the left corner was released as quickly as he touched it and it found nothing but net for the game winner.  It was his only basket of the night.

The Otters struggled mightily at the free throw line, making only 7 of 23 attempts.  Scoring leaders were Ryan Hirst and Henry Bethel with 14 and 12 points, respectively.  Hirst had a team high 8 rebounds and blocked a pair of shots. Micah Johnson finished with 5 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals, and Levi King recorded 6 rebounds.

Fergus Falls (1-1) will host St. Peter on Friday night and will face Pelican Rapids at 6:30pm Saturday at Concordia College in Moorhead.
