A balanced scoring attack helped Pelican Rapids cruise past Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in a season opening girls’ basketball contest in Fergus Falls on Tuesday night.  The Vikings led 38-14 at the half and won the game, 68-43.  Two players, Morgan Korf and Ellie Welch, were in double digits with 14 and 13 points, respectively.  Korf added 5 assists, 5 rebounds and 6 steals, while Welch finished with a team high 9 rebounds and contributed 5 assists.

Four players, Megan Guler, Ari Hovland, Anna Roisum and Grace Backstrom delivered 9 points each.  Hovland also had 4 rebounds.  Claudia Gurath grabbed 5 rebounds and collected 3 steals.

“Pelican is a quick, physical, and well-coached team,” stated Hillcrest Head Coach Hannah Clark.  “Our youth and inexperience showed at times, but I was very pleased with how hard the girls played.  We seemed a little out of rhythm on the offensive end, but this is a new group of girls still learning each other’s strengths and tendencies.  As we play more games I believe our team will become more in sync.”

Leaders for the Comets were Ella Knutson (13 points, 10 rebounds), Ruby Peterson (10 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals), Elsa Retzlaff (10 points, 6 rebounds), Kate Olstad (4 points), Aaveah Stender (2 points, 6 rebounds), Emma Berge (2 points, 5 rebounds) and Natalie Maggert (2 points).

“Ruby had a great all-around game for us and Ella had a great night as well, finishing the night with a double-double,” added Coach Clark.

Pelican Rapids opens Heart O’ Lakes Conference play with a home game against Hawley on Friday night.

Hillcrest has their next game at Hancock next Tuesday night.
