The Underwood girls’ basketball team shot 53% (31-58) from the field, built a 42-14 halftime lead, and went on to defeat New York Mills, 67-26, in their season opener on Tuesday night.  The Rockets hit 33% (5-15) of their 3-point field goal attempts.  “It was a good first game for us,” stated Head Coach Brian Hovland of Underwood.  “New York Mills has a lot of size that gives us tough matchups.  I was proud of how our girls defended their bigs.”

Liz Lukken poured in 26 points and came away with 4 steals to lead the Rockets.  Ezrah Baker joined her in double figures with 12 points, while adding 4 rebounds and 3 assists.  Kallyn Grove (9 points, 6 rebounds, 6 steals), Emma Dirkman (8 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals) and Mily Albjerg (6 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists) had solid floor games.

The Rockets will open Little Eight Conference play on Monday at Ashby and will have their first home game on Tuesday against the Perham Yellowjackets.

New York Mills has their first four games at home and play six of their first seven in their gym.  They will host Park Christian on Thursday and Mahnomen/Waubun on Saturday.  No Eagles stats were reported.
