The Bertha-Hewitt girls’ basketball team lost only one player to graduation.  That means several underclassmen earned valuable varsity experience last season and will be counted on as seniors to lead the Bears on and off the court.  Senior guards Ava Bauch and Taylor Lloyd will serve as team captains as the Bears try to improve on their 8-20 season of a year ago.

Seniors Carissa Winscher (Forward), Taylor Mitchell (Guard), Michaela Barthel (Guard), Keira Bertram (Guard) and Natalie Cline (Forward), and juniors Jorja Weishalla (Guard) and Rochelle Dean (Guard) are the other returning letter winners.  Seniors Hanna Simpson (Forward) and Hailee Wolf Kuchinski (Guard), and sophomores Krystin Beyatt (Forward), Anna Hegarty (Forward) and Piper Dean (Guard) are expected to compete for varsity playing time.

“We return a lot of girls that played big for us last year,” noted sixth-year head coach Steven Kvam.  “We only had one graduate off last year’s team, so we have a lot of experience coming back.  We also have some girls that have stepped up over the summer and look to be aggressive on both ends of the court.  We will have to have a lot of girls play taller than they are.  We have a lot of guard depth, so finding who will be able to play inside and outside on offense and defense will be key.”

Kathryn McDaniel and Lance Grewe will assist Kvam.

“Section 5A is very good this year,” added Coach Kvam.  “I look for Walker-Hackensack-Akeley and Nevis to be at the top, but I think there are a few teams that will get tougher as the season progresses.  Conference play this year I think Wadena-Deer Creek and New York Mills will be the favorites in the Park Region.”
