Owls Handle Comets in Hancock

The Hancock Owls hosted Hillcrest Lutheran Academy on Friday night and the Owls built a 24-0 first quarter lead on the way to a 52-6 victory over the Comets.  Hancock had 316 (130 passing, 231 rushing) total yards and held Hillcrest to 138 total yards.

 

Nathan Kellenberger hauled in a 35 yard pass from Brady Luthi to get the Owls on the board.  Chase Evink scored the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.  Evink then scored on a one yard run and added the two-point run for a 16-0 advantage.  Kellenberger then caught a 19 yard pass from Luthi and Evink scored another two-point conversion, giving Hancock a 24-0 lead at the end of one quarter.

In the third quarter Winston Schaefer scored on a 28 yard run, increasing the lead to 30-0.  Evink then scored on a 27 yard run and caught a two-point conversion pass from Luthi, making it a 38-0 lead.  Schaefer’s 16 yard run and a Luthi two point run put the score at 46-0 after three quarters.

Hillcrest got on the board with a 26 yard TD pass from Ethan Swedberg to Leo Nordick.

Kellenberger followed that TD with an 83 yard kick-off return for the final Hancock touchdown and a 52-6 final score.

Luthi completed 7-of-21 passes for 130 yards and a pair of TD’s.  Evink ran for 177 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns and Kellenberger had 4 catches for 75 yards and two scores.  Defensively, Evink and Donovan Curfman each had two sacks.  Jeremiah Schmidgall (4 solo tackles, 6 assisted tackles, 2 tackles for loss) led the team in tackles and Hudson Versteeg recovered a fumble.

Leaders for the Comets were Gabe Swedenburg (1 carry, 21 yards, 7 receptions, 54 yards), Nordick (2 catches, 29 yards, TD), Isaac Blaskowski (3 catches, 23 yards) and Swedberg (13 completions, 28 attempts, 112 yards, TD).  Defensively, Trevor Mortenson had an interception, and Swedenburg and Zander Johnson led the team with 5.5 tackles each.

Hancock will play Ottertail Central in Henning at 6:00pm Wednesday, while Hillcrest closes out the regular season with a 7:00pm home game against Rothsay.
