The Hawley Nuggets survived a tough 3-set finals match with the host Perham Yellowjackets to win the championship of the KLN Volleyball Invitational on Saturday, 2-1 (23-25, 25-20, 15-13). Hawley arrived in the finals with a 2-0 (25-16, 25-19) first round win over Walker-Hackensack-Akeley, a 2-0 (25-21, 25-8) quarterfinal round win over Staples-Motley and a 2-1 (19-25, 25-17, 15-12) victory over Melrose in the semifinals. Perham’s path to the finals included a 2-0 (25-14, 25-20) first round win over Pierz, a 2-0 (25-13, 25-8) win over Sebeka in the quarterfinal round, and a 2-0 (25-22, 25-22) victory over Kittson County Central in the semi’s.
Melrose defeated Kittson County Central 2-0 (25-15, 25-21) for 3rd place, Staples-Motley claimed fifth place with a 2-1 (25-17, 14-25, 16-14) win over Sebeka, and Thief River Fall beat Park Rapids 2-1 (25-18, 23-25, 16-14) to finish seventh. Henning took 9th place, recording a 2-1 (20-25, 28-26, 15-12) win over Underwood. Pierz was 11th, beating Park Christian School 2-1 (26-24, 17-25. 16-14).
