Abdinasir Omar scored a pair of second half goals as the Pelican Rapids boys’ soccer team overcame a late 1-0 deficit to record a 2-1 win over Hillcrest Lutheran Academy on Saturday afternoon at Danielson Field in Fergus Falls.  The win avenged a 2-0 Vikings loss to the Comets earlier this season.

After a scoreless first half, Comet senior TJ Idudu picked up his second yellow card at 60 minutes into the game, forcing the Comets to play a man short for the remainder of the contest.  Three minutes later, midfielder Drew Fischer gathered the ball five yards out form the 18 and sent a blast at the Viking goal.  Sophomore Lincoln Nash deflected the ball into the Viking net scoring his first varsity goal and putting the Comets up 1-0.

The Hillcrest lead did not last long as four minutes later the Vikings attacked up the right sideline and scored following a centering pass from Hamse Mohamed that setup Omar for his first goal, tying the game 1-1.  With just eight minutes left in the game, the Comets defense could not clear a ball in front of their goal, leading to a second goal for Omar, who knocked in a rebound of his own shot.

The Comets had seven shots on goal compared to ten for the Vikings.

“The Vikings wanted it more than the Comets did today,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Rod Jensen.  “They were first to most of all balls and controlled the tempo of most of the game.”

The Comets (7-6-1) will host Detroit Lakes in a conference matchup on Thursday.

Pelican Rapids (3-4-2) will play at Central Minnesota Christian on Monday.
