The Barnesville Trojans hosted Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in a Heart O’ Lakes Conference volleyball match that went all five sets before the home team prevailed, winning 28-26, 25-20, 14-25, 23-25, 15-13 over the Rebels on Thursday night.  “The ladies came out with a great deal of enthusiasm and intensity to start the night off,” reported Barnesville Head Coach Megan Askegaard. “On the first set we did so many things the right way. We played smart and aggressively. I also thought we communicated very well. l There were many great hustle plays throughout the night from both sides. The girls did not give up and hustled to make sure that every ball was fought for.”

The Trojans were led by hitters Abby John (16 kills, 2 solo blocks), Lexi Hoeft (10 kills, 1 solo block, 16/18 serving, 3 aces, 4 digs), Amelia Newell (7 kills, 25 set assists, 25/25 serving, 10 digs, 1 block assist) and Aubryn Hinsz (6 kills).  Macie Pauna (5 kills, 16/17 serving, 1 solo block, 3 digs) and Lydia Braton (4 kills, 12/12 serving, 2 aces, 3 solo blocks, 1 block assist) also contributed to the attack at the net.  Sophie Frederick had 17 set assists and was a perfect 14-for-14 on the serving line.  Kenadee Gray led the team with 22 digs and was 13-for-15 serving with 1 ace.

“I thought tonight we did a great job of utilizing our hitters when we needed to get a point up on the scoreboard,” noted Coach Askegaard. “Abby had a big night and we were able to continue to get her the ball up in the middle attack. Lydia made some smart heads up plays in the front line tonight and was a threat to the Rebels from the serving line in the backcourt.  Lexi also found success in the back row playing great left back defense and also finding her attack up in the front. Macie dug up many balls coming from their outside attack and played a very smart placed 3rd contact on the DGF side of the net. Aubryn made a great hustle play for us tonight coming from the right front position all the way to the backcourt to send the ball over the net. Amelia and Sophie worked well together to pick up balls in the right side defensive area and keep our set ball moving along the net to find those hitters who needed the ball. Kenadee was a great scoring threat behind the serving line and also put up an aggressive 3rd ball contact as well. I am proud of how well my bench worked together tonight to communicate with their teammates out on the court. They worked with their teammates to provide positive feedback to help them find success while out on the playing court.  As a team we were extremely scrappy and fought hard to make sure that we went after every ball that we might have thought was down.”

Barnesville has road contests at Henning on Tuesday and at Breckenridge on Thursday, before hosting their home tournament on Saturday, September 30.
