The Hillcrest volleyball team traveled to Hancock on Thursday for their first Little Eight Conference match of the season.  The Comets were on their game as they posted a 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-20) victory over the Owls.

Leaders for the lady Comets were Emily Adams (8/8 serving, 3 serving points, 7 kills, 9 digs, 1 block kill), Ruby Peterson (13/13 serving, 7 serving points, 32 set assists, 2 kills, 9 digs), Anna Brumfield (17/17 serving, 12 serving points, 14 kills, 11 digs, 1 block kill), Kenzie Miller (12/13 serving, 2 aces, 9 serving points, 6 kills, 5 digs, 3 block kills), Ella Knutson (4 serving points, 8 kills, 9 digs) and Elsa Retzlaff (11/12 serving, 2 aces, 8 serving points, 8 kills, 8 digs).  Chloe Walkup and Maddie Miller added 5 digs and 3 digs, respectively.

“I’m thankful that we got our first conference win of the season,” said Head Coach Debi Foss of Hillcrest.  “The Owls are an athletic team and came at us strong from the net.  They varied their attacks and tips, but our girls were able to put up some blocks and also pick up a lot of balls in the back court.  Overall, our offense was pretty balanced, but I felt like everyone had their own little run during the match.  It was also nice to see some of our new varsity players, Elsa Retzlaff and Kenzie Miller, improve on their hitting efficiency.  We also did a better job of keeping our momentum going straight through the match and getting the win in three sets.”

The Comets will participate in the Pelican Rapids Tournament on Saturday.

The Owls were led by Kaitlyn Rohloff (7 digs, 3 kills), Kaitlyn Staples (4 digs, 18 assists, 2 kills, 1 ace), Eva Schaefer (1 ace, 4 digs), Rylie Mattson (5 digs), Misti Zempel (2 aces, 5 kills, 1 assist, 10 digs), Kaylynn Christianson (1 dig, 2 kills) and Brooke Ver Steeg (1 ace, 10 kills, 5 digs).

Hancock will host Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley next Tuesday, travel to Battle Lake on Thursday and participate in the Hawley Tournament on Saturday, September 16.
