The Pelican Rapids volleyball team had their home opener on Thursday against Hillcrest Lutheran Academy.  Hillcrest won the first set 25-19, however, the lady Vikings came back to win the match 3-1, winning set 2, 25-17, taking set 3, 25-23, and securing the win with a 25-23 victory in the fourth set.  “We were excited to play on our home court for the first time this season and knew we had a tough opponent with the powerful Comets,” said Head Coach Heidi Isaman. “Hillcrest came out strong, hitting the ball well.  We struggled with our blocking to start the night and were not pressing the net like we needed to and the Comets quickly took advantage.  We improved our passing and hitting as the night went on.”

Setters Anna Roisum (16 assists) and Ellie Welch (13 assists) did a good job mixing up their hitters and getting the ball where they needed to put it to get the Viking hitters to swing with full power.  Right side hitter Zayla Arrow (6 kills, 1 block) played a solid game on the offensive and defense end, providing several key kills and a monster block.  Libero Morgan Korf (29 digs, 3 kills, 1 ace) was solid, reading the Comet hitters and defending the back court corner-to-corner.  Welch (8 kills, 3 blocks, 12 digs), Roisum (14 kills, 4 digs), Marie Backstrom (5 kills, 2 aces, 5 digs, 1.5 blocks) and Claudia Gurath (12 digs, 4 aces, 2 kills) made big contributions throughout the match.

“It was another tough loss for us, but we’ll take it as an opportunity to learn and improve,” commented Hillcrest Head Coach Debi Foss.  “The season is early and I’m confident the girls will be able to work through these challenges.”

Leaders for the Comets were Anna Brumfield (11 kills, 2 block kills, 14 digs), Ruby Peterson (7 kills, 18 digs, 37 set assists), Emily Adams (3 ace serves, 8 kills, 8 digs), Ella Knutson (6 kills, 2 ace serves, 14 digs), Elsa Retzlaff (4 kills, 7 digs, 1 ace serve), Kaia Miller (2 kills, 5 digs), Kenzie Miller (7 kills, 5 digs, 1 block kill) and Chloe Walkup (15 digs).

“Overall, I was very proud of how the girls fought back tonight, fixed the problems we were having, and got more aggressive as the night went on against a very good Hillcrest team,” concluded Coach Isaman.

The Vikings will continue their home schedule by hosting Rothsay on Tuesday.
