The Hillcrest football team fell behind 37-6 at halftime in Fosston on Thursday night, but the Comets rallied with a strong second half, cutting the lead to 37-36 with just over 8 minutes remaining in the game. The Greyhounds were able to put the game away thanks to a 13 play, 67 yard scoring drive that took over 7 minutes off the clock, leading them to a 45-36 victory.
Hillcrest was led by Ethan Swedberg, who completed 25 of 39 pass attempts for 277 yards and 5 touchdowns. Gabe Swedenburg was on the receiving end of 11 of those completions for 135 yards and 4 scores. Thor Ewan was the leading rusher with 16 carries for 76 yards.
Hillcrest had 349 yards of total offense and Fosston finished with 473 yards, including 305 rushing yards. Gavvin Gray carried the ball 24 times for 210 yards and Jakob Rudie had 21 carries for 103 yards and 4 TD’s. Rudie also completed 5-of-13 passes for 168 yards. His leading receiver was Ryne Duppong with 3 catches for 85 yards.
Each team had just one turnover in the game. Xander Johnson had an interception for the Comets.
“As a team we have to be consistent for 4 quarters,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Korey Fry. “We can’t just be a second half team. Fosston came out and played hard to open the game. We had quite a few mistakes and penalties early that just hurt us. We made some great adjustments at half defensively that put us in a position to steal the game late. I was very impressed with our younger guys who saw their first true varsity action. Ethan Swedberg played great and commanded the offense, and Maverick Peterson, as a freshman, played a huge role defensively.”
Hillcrest will host Ortonville in their home opener on Friday, September 8 at 7:00pm.
