Barnesville High School graduate and Trojan Volleyball alum Rachel Solum is now coaching the Detroit Lakes Lakers.  On Thursday night her Lakers handed the Trojans a 3-0 (25-5, 25-15, 25-17) loss.

“Tonight was a match where we really had a hard time getting into the action against a very tough Detroit Lakes team,” said Barnesville Head Coach Megan Askegaard. “They have some very talented players who play some great volleyball.”

The first set tonight was all the Lakers. They served  tough and the Trojans  just couldn’t return their hard serves. "We were slow on our feet and didn’t get behind the volleyball," noted Coach Askegaard. "We had some small glimpses where we made a couple plays on our side, however it wasn’t enough against a team that serves extremely tough. We made too many mistakes and couldn’t get anything rolling on our side."

Barnesville rallied and came on with a little bit of momentum in set 2 to get a couple quick serving runs and some nice touches on a couple hard hit balls from the Lakers. "They have a great setter who puts that ball up to her hitters and gets them in scoring position often," said Askegaard. "We struggled a little with our timing of our block and getting stopped on the defensive side of things to get the ball up and playable on our side. We made some line up changes to get some players into the match to see what we would be able to accomplish on our side of the net. We dropped the 2nd set and came back out in the 3rd set with a little more momentum to make another solid run to try and get the 3rd set. We took too many scoring opportunities away from ourselves by missing serves and not putting our 3rd ball over the net into play. Up against a great team, we need to do those little things right to help keep the game close. "

Statistical leaders for the Trojans were Aubryn Hinz (4 kills, 1 ace), Lexi Hoeft (3 kills), Amelia Newell (11 assists, 8/8 serving, 2 aces, 4 digs), Elisabeth Mulcahy (7/7 serving), Kenadee Gray (5 digs) and Macie Pauna (4 digs, 6/6 serving, 2 kills).

Coach Askegaard concluded with, "It was great to see a former student, athlete, and coach having success at the varsity level. Rachel Solum has done a great job with her team and they will be a fun team to watch this season. They have the ability and potential to go far this season. "

We move on to play Hawley next week.
