The Hillcrest baseball team concluded their regular season schedule on Tuesday with a double header loss to Benson.  The Comets lost the first game, 6-3, and fell in the nightcap, 16-11.

Benson scored four runs in the second inning to take a 5-1 lead in game one.  Nate Bermel (5IP, 5R, 3ER, 11H, 2K, 4BB) took the loss on the mound.  Hitting leaders were Jon Wutka (2-3, R, RBI) and Bermel (1-3, RBI, SB).

“Three words … too many errors,” said Comets Head Coach Zach Stich.  “We continued to battle back into the game, but our bats went cold after the third inning.

The Braves struck for 9 first inning runs in the second game and collected 13 hits in the game.  Hillcrest continued their fielding struggles, committing four errors.  Benson led 12-5 when Hillcrest put six runs on the board in the fourth inning, to pull to within one run, however, a 4-run fifth gave the Braves a cushion and they were able to take the victory.

"This was a game that had a lot of ups and downs,” reported Coach Stich.  “First, we spotted them nine runs in the first inning, but our drive to compete kept us from throwing in the towel.  Micah Bermel (1-3, HR, 4RBI, R) got out of his funk at the right time and hit a grand slam over the left field wall to cut Benson’s lead to one.  Although we had a fighting chance, errors did us in and we couldn’t overcome them.”

Other hitting leaders for the Comets in game two were Evan Lindgren (3-3, 5SB, 3R, BB), Nate Bermel (2-2, 3RBI, 2R) and Wutka (2-4, RBI, R).

Hillcrest will open the playoffs at 5:00pm Tuesday, May 30, most like at New York Mills.  Section 6A seeding will be announced on Saturday.
