The Hillcrest Comets took a short trip to Ashby on Monday where they faced the Arrows in a baseball double header.  Nate Bermel struck out 9 and scattered 5 hits to gain a 2-0 victory in game one for the Comets and in game two, Ashby broke a 2-2 tie with a 3-run fifth inning to gain the split with a 5-2 win.

Micah Bermel recorded the final out in the opener to earn a save.  Hitting leaders were Evan Lindgren (4-4, 3 2B, SB, R), Nate Bermel (2-4, 2RBI), Joe Torgeson (1-3, BB, R), Jonathan Wutka (1-3, SB) and Luke McGuire (1-3).

Brodie Ecker (6IP, 11K, 2ER, 9H, 2BB) took the loss for Ashby.

“We pulled out a really tough battle in an amazing high school pitching duel,” Comets head coach Zach Stich said.  “Both pitchers were hitting their zones and making batters fan on pitches.  Nate was able to pick up the win by helping out his own cause with a clutch two-run hit in the third inning.  From then on, he and the Comets closed the door.”

Jake Norby (4IP, 5K, 2ER) was the winning pitcher for the Arrows in the second game and Logan Johnson threw a hitless inning of relief to get the save.  Ethan Swedberg (5IP, 5K, 4ER, 4BB) took the loss.

The Comets were led at the plate by Swedberg (2-2, 2B, RBI, SB, R) and Wutka (1-2, SB).

“It was another tight game between us and the Arrows,” reported Stich.  “An early mistake gave them the advantage and we battled back to tie it up before the final inning.  Ashby put together a good fifth and we were unable to respond.”

The Comets next action comes on Thursday, May 18 when they host Border West in a double header at American Legion Field at DeLagoon Park.
