Owls Win Pair of Five Inning Games From Comets

The Hancock baseball team won a pair of five-inning contests on Tuesday against Hillcrest Lutheran Academy, winning 18-2 and 12-1.

Game one saw the Owls scored two in the first, three in the second, four in the third and nine in the fourth.  Hillcrest had single runs in the second and fourth innings.

Chase Evink drove in 5 runs on 3 hits to lead the Owls at the plate and Donovan Curfman had 2 RBI.  Davin Rose went 4 innings on the mound, striking out 4 batters to earn the victory.

Jon Wutka (2-3, RBI), Micah Bermel (1-2, BB, R) and Isaac Iverson (3BB, R) were the leaders for the Comets.  Ethan Swedberg pitched 2 1/3 innings, fanning 5 batters and taking the loss.

In game two, Hudson VerSteeg struck out four batters in three innings on the mound and also had two hits and drove in two runs for the Owls.  Davin Rose also had two hits and two RBI, while Chase Evink delivered a pair of hits in the victory.

Hancock got off to a fast start, scoring twice in the first inning and adding four runs in the second.  After the Comets got on the board with a single run in the third inning, the Owls responded with four more in the fourth and two in the fifth, ending the game by the ten-run rule.

Leaders for the Comets were Nate Bermel (1-3), Micah Bermel (1-3), Joe Torgeson (1-2), Luke McGuire (1-2) and Evan Lindgren (BB, SB, R).  Nate Bermel (3IP, 6ER, 1K, 1BB) took the loss on the mound.

“Fundamentally, we did not play our best game,” Comets Head Coach Zach Stich said.  “We had too many errors and too many mental lapses.  The guys know that we didn’t play Comet baseball and we are going to work on begin aggressive and paying attention to detail.”

Hillcrest will play St. John’s Prep on Wednesday at M State in Fergus Falls.
