The 2022 track and field season was a successful one for the Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale girls’ squad as they had several top performances in the Section 6A meet.  The good news is, everyone returns from that team.  As a team they were a Gold Level All-Academic State award winner, with Olivia Stanley (JR) earning a spot on the All-State Academic Team.

Stanley won the 6A 100 meter dash, was runner-up in the 200 meter dash, and was a member of the conference champion 4x800 meter relay team, along with Lezah Dean (SO), Mia Arroyo (SO) and Kendra Miller (8th).  Miller was the conference champion in the 3200 meter run and Arroyo came in second.  Miller finished sixth in the 3200.

Other key contributors were juniors Michaela Barthel and Taylor Lloyd, freshman Mikayla Allen, and eighth-grader Makenzee Sales.  Key newcomers to the varsity include junior Hannah Simpson, and sophomores Rochelle Dean and Payton Allen.

Captains for 2023 are Alayna Barthel, Aubrey Hess and Ashley Warren.

“We have some good numbers this year and that always helps, but we are still lacking experience and depth in many events,” noted Head Coach Kenny Miller.  “I believe we can compete for a top three finish at the Park Region Conference Meet and should walk away with multiple conference titles in our strongest events.  Olivia Stanley is our anchor in the sprints and Kendra Miller holds the same title in the mid-distance/distance events.  I believe those two, and possibly Michaela Barthel, have the best opportunity for a state berth.  We will need to stay healthy and work hard to achieve our individual and team goals throughout the season.”

Miller, who will be assisted by Alexys Thompson, sees Wadena-Deer Creek, Pillager and Ottertail Central as the top teams in the conference, while Perham, Staples-Motley and Osakis are the favorites in Section 6A.
