Maddie Ballweg reached the 1,000 point milestone on Thursday night, scoring 29 points to lead the Hillcrest girls’ basketball team to a 71-56 win over Battle Lake.  She also had 5 rebounds and 5 steals.

“Maddie has spent countless hours in the gym and it was fun to see her get recognized for all of her hard work,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Hannah Clark.  “She’s a great player, but an even better person, and I’m so proud of her!”

Ballweg was joined in double digits by  Lizzy Olstad with 12 and Ella Knutson with 11.  Knutson also had 11 rebounds, completing a double double.  She added 4 steals and 4 assists.  Elsa Retzlaff scored 9 points,  Ruby Peterson had 4 points and 3 steals, and Stella Moline chipped in with 6 points.

“The girls moved the ball well on offense and found their open teammates who knocked down shots,” reported Coach Clark.  “Elsa and Lizzy both had great offensive games for us, knocking down multiple shots from various spots on the floor.  Ella came away with another double double and Ruby was our spark on defense that really got our team going whenever we started to slow down.”

“We had a good start tonight, but a run later in the first half gave the Comets a 40-25 lead at the half,” said Battle Lake Head Coach David Marso.  “In the second half we made a nice run to cut the lead to ten points, but the Comets made a series of three’s to pull away.  We played a pretty good game, but the Comets just had too much offense for us to handle.”

Hillcrest (16-8, 11-6 LEC) will play at Breckenridge on Tuesday and then close out their regular season with a home game against Lake Park-Audubon on Thursday.

Battle Lake (3-20, 1-14 LEC) has a makeup game at Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley on Friday night.
