Ashby and Hancock battled to a one point decision in a Little Eight Conference boys’ basketball contest on Friday night on the Owls home court.  Hancock led 24-23 at the half and each team scored 31 second half points as the Owls held on for a 55-54 win.  Hancock held a comfortable 39-26 advantage on the boards.

The Owls were led by Jackson Koehl (16 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals), Hudson VerSteeg (11 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists) and Chase Evink (10 points).  Jared Koehl added 9 points and 6 rebounds.

Jake Norby scored 13 second half points to lead the Arrows.  Richie Johnson was the only other Arrow to reach double figures netting a dozen.  Easton Nelson added nine, Brodie Ecker 8, Kellen Dahlen 7, and Bradee Christianson rounded out the scoring with 5 points.  The Arrows shot 46% (22/48) from the field including 35% (7/20) from three-point range.

“We couldn't overcome a 24-8 attempted free throw discrepancy,” said Ashby Head Coach John Holsten.  “Hancock made 13 of their tries.  We converted just three and only shot one in the second half.  We're proud of the team and Ashby fans for their composure with an extremely challenging basketball experience.”

Hancock (7-8, 5-6 LEC) plays at Parkers Praire on Tuesday and at Rothsay on Friday.

Ashby (5-10, 4-8 LEC) will host Border West on Tuesday and West Central Area on Friday.
