The Battle Lake boys’ basketball team improved their season record to 6-2 with a 56-39 victory over Underwood on Thursday night.  The Rockets pulled to within nine points with 4:30 left in the game, however, the Battlers went on a 10-2 run to close out the game.

Jack Mekalson led all scorers with 23 points.  He was joined in double digits by Drew Johnson and Owen Buehler with 12 and 11 points, respectively.  Johnson and Mekalson completed double-doubles with 14 and 10 rebounds, respectively.  Mason Dalluge also had 14 rebounds and a team high 6 assists.

“We played a solid game tonight," said Battle Lake Head Coach Brady Cameron. "We didn’t shoot well again but our defense gave us a chance to win holding Underwood to 20% from the floor.  We haven’t rebounded well yet this year and tonight we finally hit the glass hard and won the rebounding battle 62-39.  Part of our struggle in the 2nd half was our turnovers and giving up 17 points off those turnovers. In order for us to take the next step we need to start taking care of the ball.”

Underwood was led by Drew Evavold with 11 points and 7 rebounds, Kaleb Hammes with 10 points and 3 assists and Cole Peterson with 9 points and 8 rebounds. Hudson Risbrudt also chipped in with 8 rebounds.

“We got off to a very slow start offensively, and didn’t shoot the ball well, especially in the first half,” commented Underwood Head Coach Kellen Shebeck. “However, with about 5 minutes to go, we were able to cut the lead to 9, but just couldn’t get over that hump. Overall, we rebounded well and did a decent job on defense, with a few breakdowns. Battle Lake is extremely long and athletic, which gave us some issues.”

The Battlers next game will come at home on Tuesday night against Border West.

Underwood (4-3) will entertain Border West on Friday, January 6.
