Seventh-grader Elsa Retzlaff stepped to the free throw line with 2.8 seconds left and the Hillcrest Comets tied with Wheaton/Herman-Norcross at 63-63.  Retzlaff hit the front end of a one-and-one opportunity to break the tie and the Comets walked off the court with their third win in their first four games, winning 64-63.  Retzlaff finished with 13 points, 9 in the second half.

Maddie Ballweg led the Comets with 16 points, making 10-of-11 free throws.  Ella Knutson registered a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.  She hit three 3’s and dished out 3 assists.  Ruby Peterson added 9 points and Madi Foss had 7 points and 11 rebounds.  Hillcrest was outstanding at the free throw line, making 17-of-20.

"This was a great team win for us tonight," said Hillcrest Head Coach Hannah Clark.  "We executed our defensive plan and we played very unselfish basketball on the offensive end.  Maddie Ballweg led us with 16 points, but we were very balanced in scoring with all of our players and that’s how we’ve been successful this year.  Ella did a great job on their stud post, Brylie Schultz, holding her to 5 points on the night. It was a total team effort, but credit to Ella on a great night with a tough defensive assignment.  Elsa Retzlaff played a great game and it was fun to see her step up to the line with confidence and knock down the go ahead free throw."

Wheaton/Herman-Norcross was led by Julia Schmidt with 23 points, including five 3’s, and 9 rebounds.  Sadie Vipond added 12 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.  Megyn Kelly was also in double digits with 11 points.  Brylie Schultz was held to 5 points, but had a team high 10 rebounds.  Jordynn Perry secured 9 rebounds for the Warriors.

Wheaton/Herman-Norcross won the battle of the boards, 51-37.  The Warriors led 32-32 at the half as they scored the final ten points of the half to pull even.  They had a 30-12 rebounding advantage in the first half.

Hillcrest (3-1) will play at Pelican Rapids on Monday night.

Wheaton/Herman-Norcross (0-3) has road games at Ashby on Tuesday night and at Breckenridge on Thursday.
