Battle Lake withstood a strong comeback attempt by Breckenridge in a non-conference boys’ basketball contest on Tuesday night in Battle Lake, recording a 69-67 victory over the Cowboys.  Battle Lake led 37-34 at the half and extended their lead to double digits early in the second half before the Cowboys hit the comeback trail, pulling as close as one point.

Damon Smith hit four 3’s to key the Cowboys offensive attack, finishing with a team high 14 points.  He was joined in double digits by Alex Sanchez with 13, and Landon Blaufuss finished with 11 points and a team high 9 rebounds. Smith and Sanchez also had 6 rebounds each.  Cam Nieto contributed 9 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists, Jacob Kunkel added 8 points and 8 rebounds off the bench and Beau Beyer supplied 7 points and 7 boards in a reserve role.

Bradyn Roisum poured in a game high 25 points to lead the Battlers and Jack Mekalson had 22.  Owen Buehler also finished in double figures with 13.  Rebound leaders were Mekalson and Buehler with 8 each, followed by Roisum and Drew Johnson with 6 apiece.  Johnson and Mekalson led the team with 3 assists and Roisum had a team high 3 steals.

"We showed a lot of heart and toughness tonight," said Battle Lake Head Coach Brady Cameron.  "We had two guys out with sickness and had three guys foul out.  We finished the game with 5 eligible players and one of those five had 4 fouls, so we had to play smart at the end of the game and not foul.  We missed some free throws at the end that could have sealed the win for us, but we got to work on some late game situations that will hopefully help us as the season progresses.  I give tons of props to Breckenridge.  They were playing shorthanded as well and fought to the end."

Battle Lake (2-0) will host New York Mills on Thursday night.

Breckenridge (0-2) travels to Wheaton next Tuesday to face Border West.
