The Hillcrest girls’ basketball team opened their season Saturday with a 71-49 victory over Heritage Christian Academy.  “We started out slow and lacked intensity, but the girls flipped the switch at about the four minute mark and went on an 18-2 run to finish out the first half and never looked back,” said Head Coach Hannah Clark of the Comets.

The Comets were led by Madison Ballweg (26 points, 10-14 FT, 4 rebounds, 3 assists), Ella Knutson (22 points, 8 rebounds), Ruby Peterson (14 points, 4 steals), Madi Foss (6 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists) and Elsa Retzlaff (3 points).

“We didn’t shoot the ball well from the outside, but the girls countered that by attacking the rim and getting to the free throw line (21-31),” said Clark.  “The girls played very unselfish basketball and it was fun to watch them continue to build team chemistry.  Maddie Ballweg and Ella Knutson led us offensively, Madi Foss had a great all-around game, and Ruby Peterson really disrupted the Eagles on the defensive end.  We were without our senior point guard Lizzy Olstad, but our younger girls stepped up and played quality minutes.”

Hillcrest will host Hancock in their home opener on Tuesday night.
