The Alexandria Cardinals won the Section 8AA Girls Cross Country title on their home course Thursday, scoring 48 points.  The Willmar Cardinals placed second with 57 points.  Both teams will compete at the State Meet at St. Olaf College in Northfield on Saturday, November 5.  The Fergus Falls Girls improved as a team from last season by 2 places, taking fifth place in the section.

“This was a hard earned finish that involved a great deal of sweat and dedication,” commented Head Coach Niki Welde of the Otters.  “Cassie Wellman fell short of a state qualification by one place.  She ran a smart, tough race that came up just short of her goal for the season.  She ran a strong race all the way to the line today.  As an 8th grader she is such a thoughtful athlete.  As with our young team we have eyes upon next season.”

Savannah Lee (33), Naomi Dummer (39) and Sarah Grotberg (46) finished next for the Otters with another successful group effort.  Julia Anderson finished with a season best time, senior Becca Schindler ran just off a season best time and Hannah Scharnberg ran with a nagging injury that hindered her from reaching her end of season goals, but her determination and dedication to her team was apparent.

“Looking ahead at next year I have great expectations for this team,” added Coach Welde. “We are graduating a hard-working, memorable senior class while welcoming a hard working group of 8th graders to our High School team next year.”
