Lindgren Surpasses 1000 Rushing Yards, Scores 4 Times as Comets Top CGB

Evan Lindgren scored four touchdowns on Wednesday night to lead the Hillcrest Comets to a 34-30 win over Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley in the final regular season football game for both teams.  With the win the Comets enter the post season with a 3-5 record.

Lindgren also went over 1000 rushing yards on the season with his 117 yards on 18 carries.  In addition to three rushing TD’s, Lindgren broke a 77 yard kickoff return for another score during the game.

His one yard run with 1:51 left in the opening quarter gave the Comets a 6-0 lead.  A blocked extra-point kick prevented the Comets from adding more to the scoreboard.  After a fumble recovery by the Comets and an interception by the Wolverines, CGB went 73 yards in 10 plays and tied the game on a 41 yard pass from Brayden Andrews to Noah Adelman.  The two-point conversion pass was intercepted by Gabe Swedenburg, leaving the game even at 6-6 with under a minute to play in the first half.  The ensuing kickoff saw Lindgren go the distance and a two-point conversion run by Lindgren gave the Comets a 14-6 halftime advantage.

The two teams scored on each of their first three possessions of the second half to keep things close and very interesting for all in attendance.  The Comets scored on a 3 yard run by Lindgren less than two minutes into the third quarter, building a 20-6 lead.  Tyler Groebner, the outstanding running back for the Wolverines, then rumbled 48 yards for a score and added the two-point conversion run to trim the Comets lead to 20-14.  Another 3 yard run by Lindgren and a two-point pass to Isaac Blaskowski from Trey Swedenburg increased the Hillcrest lead to 28-14 with 4:07 remaining in the third quarter.

CGB answered with a 13 yard TD run by Andrews on a play that saw him fumble the football only to recover it in the end zone.  Groebner’s two-point run brought the Wolverines to with six points at 28-22 less than two minutes into the fourth quarter.  Hillcrest responded with an Erik Bjorndahl 5 yard scoring toss to Blaskowski which left the Comets in front 34-22 with 8:31 on the clock.  Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley then went 65 yards on 14 plays with Cole Gilsdorf hauling in a 3-yard TD pass from Andrews and a two-point pass to trim the lead to 34-30 with 1:57 left.  The Comets were able to kill the clock and secure the win.

Groebner ran the ball 47 times for 305 yards on the night.  The Wolverines had 423 total yards as Andrews threw for 112 yards, completing 6-of-11 passes.  Gilsdorf caught four passes for 66 yards.

Lindgren finished with 117 rushing yards on 18 carries, Bjorndahl completed 11-of-21 passes for 153 yards, and Gabe Swedenburg was on the receiving end of 6 passes for 112 yards.  Cole Peterson caught two balls for 41 yards.  Micah Bermel had a pair of fumble recoveries on the night.
