Friday night was a special night in Pelican Rapids as the Viking football team hosted Roseau.  It was a night where the school and community honored the 1997 State Championship football team as they celebrate the 25th anniversary of that title.  “It was a special night for us and I was proud of our guys for playing their hearts out for them,” commented Head Coach Eli Beachy after his team recorded a 50-6 victory over the Rams.

“It was also a special night for our seniors as it was senior night,” reported Beachy.  “Every senior made big plays and was able to touch the ball.  Carter Johnson scored two TD’s on the ground, Hunter Williams scored a touchdown on the ground and caught a pair of two-point conversion passes, Peyton Blakeway had a touchdown reception called back on a holding call, Ian Fahje had a big night defensively and caught a pass for a two-point conversion that did not count due to being a lineman, but to see the joy on his face will never leave my memory, and Anthony Hernandez was able to catch two passes which was awesome to see as it is his first year playing ball.”

Timmy Guler got the scoring started with a 23 yard TD run in the first quarter and Guler then completed a two-point pass to Williams.  Guler’s 41 yard TD pass to Jack Kapenga, and another Guler to Williams two-point pass gave Pelican Rapids a 16-0 lead.  Carter Johnson scored the third TD of the quarter on a 4 yard run and Guler added a two-point conversion run for a 24-0 Viking lead at the end of one quarter of play.

Guler connected with Treyvon Benson on a 16 yard pass to start the second quarter and then hit Johnson with the two-point conversion pass, increasing the Vikings lead to 32-0.  It became 38-0 after a 6 yard run by Williams and a failed two-point conversion try, and 44-0 after Guler broke a 94 yard touchdown run at the end of the first half.

Johnson added a 9 yard TD run in the third quarter and Roseau got their lone touchdown of the night on a fumble recovery in the end zone in the fourth quarter.

“We are excited for the opportunity this coming week presents as we look forward to traveling to Breckenridge,” stated Coach Beachy.  “They are a very solid football team and have been playing well.  It should be a very competitive game and we are thrilled for the opportunity to stay undefeated in the District, which is something we were not able to do last season.”
