The Fergus Falls boys’ soccer team and the Hillcrest boys’ soccer team ended regulation in a 2-2 tie on Saturday afternoon at the Otter Stadium Field as the two teams battled for the West Subsection title in Section 8A.  After a pair of scoreless ten-minute overtime periods, the game was decided by a five-round shootout, which was won by the Otters, scoring three goals to the Comets two.

Emil Boe got Hillcrest on the board nine minutes into the contest, but Reno Schierer tied the game with a header over Comet goalkeeper Cole Peterson at the 23 minute mark.  Schierer’s second goal of the contest came two minutes into the second half and gave the Otters a 2-1 lead.  It stayed that way until Mathias Gjerme knotted the score with just 4 minutes left in regulation.

The first overtime saw a Hillcrest goal disallowed due to an offside call on the Comets, and in the second overtime, Fergus Falls keeper Jaydon Manteufel turned aside a penalty kick opportunity by Juin Moon.

In the shootout, Hillcrest had Elias Skjelbred start things off and he started it well, scoring a goal.  Shane Zierden of the Otters banged his shot off the post and the Comets led 1-0 after the first round.

In round two, Rolf Fluge scored for Hillcrest and Manteufel scored for the Otters, leaving Hillcrest ahead 2-1.

In the third round, Gjerme’s shot went wide right for the Comets and Jose Rodriguez made his shot to even the score at 2-2.

Fourth round results went to the goalkeepers as Manteufel made a save on Nathan Aanes and Peterson stopped Kasey Eggen’s shot.

The fifth round saw Moon bang his shot off the post for Hillcrest, setting up the Otters Ryan Nelson who tucked the ball into the net to give the Otters a 3-2 advantage in the shootout and the Subsection championship.

"Jayden Manteuful had an outstanding night in net stopping 15 shots including on PK in regulation and 2 of the shootout shots," said Fergus Falls Head Coach Joel Heikes. "Our team played great all the way through the lineup. Once again our defense stepped up big and our forwards worked very hard to control the ball and capitalize on the opportunities we were given for goals."

Fergus Falls (7-9-1) will move on to play a 5:30pm contest against St. Cloud Cathedral in Sauk Centre on Tuesday to decide the Section 8A championship.

Hillcrest ends their season with a final record of 12-5-1.
