The Hillcrest football team put together four solid quarters on Friday night as they recorded a 47-12 victory on their home field against the Bertha-Hewitt Bears.  “It’s always great to get in the win column, but this one felt good,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Korey Fry.  “We started some freshmen and sophomore guys this week ad those guys played lights out all night.”

Evan Lindgren got the Comets on the board just 58 seconds into the game with a 29 yard TD run.  An extra point kick by Mathias Germe gave Hillcrest a 7-0 lead.  Less than two minutes later Erik Bjorndahl connected with Gabe Swedenburg on a 9-yard TD pass and a Gjerme extra point kick made the score 14-0.  Bertha-Hewitt cut the lead to 14-6 when Deagen Captain hit Aidan Bauch with a 22-yard pass with 4:05 left in the opening quarter.

With 10:16 remaining until halftime, Zander Johnson blocked and punt and recovered it in the end zone.  Following the PAT kick by Gjerme, the Comets led 21-6.  They increased their lead to 28-6 at 7:27 when Lindgren scored on a 6 yard run and Gjerme was again good on the extra point kick.  Hillcrest took a commanding 35-6 lead into the locker room at halftime after Bjorndahl hooked up with Leo Nordick on a 49-yard TD pass and Gjerme made it 5-for-5 on extra point attempts.

In the third quarter Lindgren broke free for a 62 yard touchdown run and Hillcrest led 41-6.

The fourth quarter saw the Bears score their second TD of the night when Becker went 45 yards for the TD, reducing the Hillcrest lead to 41-12.  With 5:07 remaining in the game, Ethan Swedberg hit Gabe Swedenburg with a 19 yard TD pass to end the scoring, putting the final score at 47-12.

“This was a collective effort from our guys,” said Coach Fry.  “We set out a goal of playing fast for four quarters and we were able to do that.  Defensively, we forced 4 turnovers in the first six minutes of the game and that was a tone setter for things to come.  Offensively, Lindgren and Bjorndahl had the offense rolling.  Special teams, which often gets overlooked, 3 recovered fumbles, 3 blocked punts and they set up our offense in good field position all night.”

Bjorndahl completed 7-of-17 passes for 99 yards and a pair of touchdowns.  Swedberg was 3-for-3 for 41 yards and a TD.  Gabe Swedenburg hauled in six passes for 56 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Nordick had 2 catches for 60 yards and a TD.  Lindgren led the ground attack with 128 yards on 12 carries, reaching the end zone 3 times.

Defensively, Johnson had 12 tackles, 1 assisted tackle, 1 sack, 2 blocked punts and a touchdown.  Micah Bermel finished with 8 tackles, 3 assisted tackles, 3 sacks, 1 blocked punt, 1 fumble recovery and 1 forced fumble.  Thor Ewan made 7 tackles, 4 assisted tackles, and recovered a fumble, and Gabe Swedenburg had 6 tackles, 1 assisted tackle, and a forced fumble. Samual Reese also recovered a fumble while making 4 tackles and assisting on 4 other tackles.

“Game ball definitely went to Zander Johnson, who was all over the field,” stated Coach Fry.  “This week in practice he was locked in.  We struggled blocking him in practice and most importantly he kept blocking our field goals in practice, so seeing him block two punts and recovering one for a score was just special.”

Hillcrest has their homecoming game on Friday night at 7:00pm against the Rothsay Tigers.

Bertha-Hewitt will host Wheaton/Herman-Norcross on Friday.
