The Fergus Falls boys’ soccer team defeated Hillcrest Lutheran Academy 2-1 on Saturday at the Otter Stadium Field.

" We had a real battle with Hillcrest this afternoon," said Fergus Falls Head Coach Joel Heikes. "Our defense and keeper again had a very nice game. The Comets put the pressure on resulting in them getting about 9 corner kicks in the game but our team held strong clearing on everyone of them. The Otters also did a good job of going on the attack."

At 21 minutes, Aiden Shern placed a pass up the middle, splitting the Comet Backs.  FFHS striker, Shane Zierden collected the pass and beat Comet Senior Captain Cole Peterson, in net, for the go ahead goal.  Eight minutes later, Comet left back, Elias Skjelbred placed a nice pass toward the center of the field to Emil Boe.  Boe, carried the ball up the middle, beating two Otter defenders and scored the tying goal.  A hand ball in the box at 32 minutes gave FFHS a penalty kick opportunity, which they capitalized on, gaining the lead on a goal by Jose Rodriguez, and completing all scoring for the game with the Otters up 2-1.

The Comets had 15 shots on goal compared to the Otters nine.

“It was an exciting game if you were in the stands, but, unfortunately, the Otters worked hard and wanted it more than we did and came prepared for the victory,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Rod Jensen.  “We had plenty of chances in the second half to tie and win the game but were unsuccessful.  Again, it was a learning experience for our coaching staff and team regarding what we need to work on as we continue into this early season.”

The Comets (3-3) travel to Bemidji on Monday for a battle against a very tough Conference opponent.

Fergus Falls (4-2) has a makeup game on Monday at home against Sartell.
