Big Play Offense Carries Vikings Past Hornets

Pelican Rapids amassed 546 yards of offense and scored the final 22 points of the game on Friday night as they improved their season record to 2-0 with a 42-20 win over the Frazee Hornets.

 

Carter Johnson had a huge night, carrying the football 11 times for 145 yards and two scores, and hauling in two passes for 67 yards and another TD.  Quarterback Timmy Guler completed 15-of-19 passes for 303 yards and 3 scores.  Top receivers for the Vikings were Peyton Blakeway with 126 yards and one TD on 7 receptions, and Jack Kapenga with 3 catches for 84 yards and a touchdown.

Frazee finished with 247 yards, 237 of it coming on the ground.  They were led by Jake Nagel with 163 rushing yards on 32 carries, including a pair of TD runs.

The Vikings scored the only touchdown of the first quarter on a 12 yard run by Kapenga, and Frazee tied the game 6-6 on Nagel’s 11 yard run to start what turned out to be a wild second quarter.  Less than a minute later Johnson found the end zone on a 5-yard run for a 12-6 Pelican Rapids lead.  The Vikings took a 20-6 advantage when Guler hit Johnson with a 46 yard scoring toss on a 3rd down and 11 play.  Johnson increased the lead to 20-6 with a two-point conversion run.  Frazee recovered a fumble by Pelican Rapids on a punt return and turned it into points when Tyler Moe carried the ball over the goal line from the one yard line.  Nagel tacked on the two-point conversion to cut the lead to 20-14.  The Hornets tied the game at 20-20 on an 11-yard run by Nagel with just 54 second left in the first half, however, the high-powered Vikings offense broke loose for a 58 yard TD pass from Guler to Kapenga to regain the lead at the half, 26-20.

Pelican Rapids scored the only points of the second half with Johnson going 94 yards midway through the third quarter and Guler scoring the two-point conversion, and Guler hitting Blakeway with a 37-yard pass in the fourth quarter.  Guler carried the ball into the end zone for the two-point conversion to make the final 42-20.
