The Hillcrest volleyball team hosted Pelican Rapids on Thursday night and the Comets took care of the Vikings in 3 sets, winning 25-18, 25-19 and 25-17.  “We had a slower start to the match and went down 10-1 early,” stated Hillcrest Head Coach Debi Foss.  “Once we got our offense going, things started to click.  I’m proud of the team for keeping their composure during that first set.”

As a team the Comets served 95% for the night and had 11 ace serves, led by seniors Maddie Ballweg with 5 and Madi Foss with 3.  Foss was 16-for-16 from the line and Ruby Peterson was 14-for-14 with an ace.

Anna Brumfield led the Comets at the net with 10 kills.  Emily Adams added 9 and Hope Adams had 6.  Peterson distributed 28 set assists and defensively, Ballweg led with 12 digs, followed by Adams with 9, Peterson with 8, Foss with 7 and Brumfield with 6.

“Even though the Vikings moved their hitters and their blockers around, we were able to adjust,” noted Coach Foss.  “It’s important to remember that there are a lot of things happening on the court that don’t have stats!  We had a solid team effort with contributions from everyone.”

Leaders on the court for Pelican Rapids were Morgan Korf (21 digs, 1 ace serve), Hazel Haugrud (11 digs), Kelsey Isaman (9 digs, 5 ace serves, 5 kills), Anna Roisum (8 digs, 9 set assists, 5 kills) and Ellie Welch (5 kills, 5 set assists, 5 digs).

“We were eager to get back on the court after our tight battle with Park Christian on Tuesday and the girls’ came out on fire,” reported Vikings Head Coach Heidi Isaman.  “We started with some aggressive serving from Hazel Haugrud and Morgan Korf to get the Comets out of system.  We took advantage and executed a quick offense very well early in the match as we took leads of 10-1 and 13-8 to start the opening set.  A few errors took away our rhythm and the Comets had an opportunity to get their big hitters in system and went on three different 4-point runs.  We played good defense but could not answer with big enough runs of our own.”

Hillcrest will travel to Ashby for their first away game of the season next Tuesday.

Pelican Rapids will travel to play Heart O’ Lakes Conference opponent Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton next Thursday before hosting their home Invitational on Saturday, September 10.
