Vikings Accumulate 376 Total Yards in 52-12 Win Over Rockets

Pelican Rapids produced several big plays, was efficient on their scoring drives and capitalized on big defensive plays that caused turnovers leading to a pair of touchdowns as the Vikings won their home and season opener 52-12 over Underwood on Thursday night.  The Vikings had 376 total yards with 211 coming on the ground and 165 through the air.

Pelican Rapids quarterback Timmy Guler scored the first TD of the game just three minutes in on a 2 yard run and Carter Johnson increased the lead to 8-0 with a two-point conversion run.  At 5:37 of the first quarter the Vikings upped their lead to 16-0 on an 11 yard TD run by Johnson and a Guler two-point conversion run.  They kicked the lead to 24-0 at 2:35 of the opening quarter when Guler connected with Peyton Blakeway on a 22 yard touchdown pass and Johnson scored on the 2-point try.  The touchdown was setup by a strip sack by Kaden Holt, who recovered the football.

In the second quarter the Vikings scored on a 5 yard run by Guler, which was setup by a bad snap in a punting situation.  That was followed by a 73 yard pass from Guler to Blakeway and a 2-point conversion pass from Guler to Johnson, allowing Pelican Rapids to take a 38-0 halftime lead.

Blakeway caught a one-yard scoring toss from Guler on the first possession of the second half and Johnson added the two-point conversion for a 46-0 lead.  Hunter Williams then registered a sack, scooped up the football when it came out and raced 35 yards for a score, making it 52-0.

Underwood scored the final two touchdowns of the night, the first on a 14-yard run by Drew Evavold and the second on a 1 yard TD run by Colin Lukken, putting the final score at 52-12.

Pelican Rapids was led by Guler who completed 8-of-13 passes for 146 yards and 3 scores.  Blakeway caught 5 passes for 116 yards, including all 3 TD’s to lead the Viking receivers.  Their top rusher was Johnson with 53 yards on 7 attempts.  Guler ran for 41 yards on 8 carries, scoring twice.  Johnson led the defensive effort with 8 solo tackles, one assisted tackle and two tackles for loss.  Channing Russman had 7 solo tackles and three assisted tackles, Williams had 5 solo tackles and a pair of sacks.  Other sacks were recorded by Holt, Anthony Checco De Souza and Ian Fahje.

For the Rockets, Lukken ran for 49 yards on 6 touches and Brock Hastling had 43 rushing yards on 8 carries.  Conner Nelson completed 2-of-5 passes for 53 yards and Owen Harig hauled in a 53 yard reception.  Defensively, Hunter Haugen registered a sack, and Hastling and Kale Rich combined on a sack.  Harig led the Rockets with 4 solo tackles and one assisted tackle, while Haugen had 4 solo tackles, including two tackles for loss.

Pelican Rapids will host Frazee on Friday, September 9 and Underwood will host Roseau at 6:00pm in their first home game of the season.
