The Hillcrest volleyball season opener was a success as the Comets swept past Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal in 3 sets, 25-22, 25-15, 25-9 on Monday night.  The Comets served 93% as a team, delivering 11 aces.  “The atmosphere in our gym tonight was ‘electric’,” stated Head Coach Debi Foss.  “Our fans were ‘all in’ as they cheered during our season opener.”

The first set was a point-for-point battle which the Comets were able to win.  Both teams had a lot of first game type errors throughout the match.  “My team did a good job of pushing through those moments and getting to the next point,” said Coach Foss.  “We caught the momentum early in both the second and third sets to get the sweep.”

Anna Brumfield and Madi Foss led the team in service points and ace serves.  Senior Tri-Captain Maddie Ballweg led with 12 digs, Madi Foss and Emily Adams each had 9 digs.  Senior Hope Adams and sophomore Anna Brumfield led the attack with 7 kills apiece.  Madi Foss and Emily Adams each had 5 kills and freshman Ella Knutson added 3 kills to the mix.

“Defensively, we had to pick-up a lot of off-speed hits and backrow attacks,” noted Foss.  “Everyone contributed to our offense in a variety of ways, at different times.  Despite the first game jitters it was a solid start to the season.  Our C-Squad and JV team also were victorious in their debut.  I’m so proud of all the girls and their willingness to trust the process.”

The next match for Hillcrest is on Thursday when they host Pelican Rapids.
